{"id":1004,"date":"2023-07-22T19:02:41","date_gmt":"2023-07-22T15:02:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.buildingtheitguy.com\/?p=1004"},"modified":"2024-01-08T18:45:29","modified_gmt":"2024-01-08T14:45:29","slug":"how-to-vmotion-in-vmware-vsphere-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.buildingtheitguy.com\/index.php\/how-to-vmotion-in-vmware-vsphere-8\/virtualization\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Perform Live VM Migration with vMotion in VMware vSphere 8"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Moving Virtual Server (VM) from One Physical ESXi host to another physical ESXi host server in VMware Hypervisor environment, you can <strong>migrate <\/strong>to same, different cross cluster even <strong>cloud <\/strong>or <strong>remote site.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>vMotion <\/em><\/strong>is a feature of VMware vSphere that allows you to <em><strong>live-migrate virtual machines <\/strong><\/em>(VMs) from one host to another <strong><em>without any downtime<\/em><\/strong>. This means that you can move a VM from one host to another without having to shut it down or restart it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>STEP 1: Requirement<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Here we have already set up the cluster with three ESXi host name ASATH-POC-Cluster along with vcsa01-poc as a vCenter Server 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"804\" height=\"415\" src=\"https:\/\/www.buildingtheitguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/vMotion-Building-THE-IT-GUY.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1005\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.buildingtheitguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/vMotion-Building-THE-IT-GUY.png 804w, https:\/\/www.buildingtheitguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/vMotion-Building-THE-IT-GUY-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/www.buildingtheitguy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/vMotion-Building-THE-IT-GUY-768x396.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 804px) 100vw, 804px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>STEP 2<\/strong>: <strong>Create a vMotion network.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By Default, there will not vMotion network in ESXi host. We need to create manually this network is used to communicate between the hosts during a vMotion migration. Here are the detailed steps on how to configure vMotion on each host:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ensure Network Connectivity<\/strong>: Make sure that the ESXi hosts you want to use for vMotion are connected to the same network and have IP connectivity with each other. vMotion requires a dedicated network for transferring VM data between hosts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Create a vSphere Standard Switch (vSwitch)<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Log in to your vCenter Server using the vSphere Client.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the appropriate datacenter or cluster from the inventory.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Navigate to the &#8220;Hosts and Clusters&#8221; view.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the ESXi host where you want to create the vMotion network.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Right-click the host and choose &#8220;New vSphere Standard Switch.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give the switch a name, and you can choose whether to use the default settings or configure custom settings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Add VMkernel Network Adapter<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the vSphere Client, navigate to the &#8220;Configure&#8221; tab of the selected ESXi host.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under &#8220;Networking,&#8221; click &#8220;Virtual switches.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the vSwitch you created earlier.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the &#8220;Add Host Networking&#8221; icon (looks like a plus &#8220;+&#8221; sign).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose &#8220;VMkernel Network Adapter&#8221; and click &#8220;Next.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the &#8220;Create a new virtual switch&#8221; option and choose the previously created vSwitch.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assign a label (e.g., &#8220;vMotion&#8221;) and an IP address for the vMotion VMkernel adapter. section on the ESXi host configuration page.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click on the &#8220;TCP\/IP&#8221; settings of the newly created vMotion VMkernel adapter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Verify&#8221;vMotion&#8221; traffic by ticking the checkbox next to &#8220;vMotion.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Repeat for Other ESXi Hosts<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you have multiple ESXi hosts and want to enable vMotion for all of them, repeat the above steps on each host.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure all hosts have a VMkernel adapter with the &#8220;vMotion&#8221; checkbox enabled and are on the same vMotion network.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure to allocation different IP for vMotion service for each host e.g 10.10.0.5, 10.10.0.6 and 10.10.0.7<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Verify vMotion Migration<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To test vMotion functionality, select a virtual machine running on one of the ESXi hosts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Right-click the VM and choose &#8220;Migrate&#8221;
